The main reason we’re picking Alaska Alpine Adventures is founder Dan Oberlatz. The restless 46-year-old uses his company as an excuse for his guides to explore the remotest, most beautiful, baddest-assed expanses of the country’s wildest state. When you sign up as a “client” on AAA’s trips, you’re less of a customer and more of a joint participant. In 2007, a few guests itching for something new found a 55-mile route through the rugged Neacola Mountains in Lake Clark National Park. Last year, Oberlatz helped another pair of longtime regulars blaze a 100-mile backpacking route into the 19 million–acre Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. In 2013, owner Dan Oberlatz guided writer Christopher Solomon & photographer Gabe Rogel across the Alaska Peninsula and through the wild and remote Aniakchak National Monument & Preserve. They backpacked from the village of Port Heiden, located on the windswept Bering Sea coastline, up and over the caldera rim, and into the surreal confines of the largest volcanic caldera of its kind in Alaska. They camped along the shores of Surprise Lake, hiked the caldera rim, and basked in the solitude granted to the rare few who step foot in the least visited National Park unit in the nation. Their trip was featured in the May 2014 issue of Outside Magazine, and subsequently Christopher was interviewed on NPR and on Rick Steves’ nationally syndicated radio show in June of 2014.

In May of 2011, Dan and longtime friend and client, Mark Stevens were recognized in Men’s Journal for their decade of backpacking adventures in Alaska. Mark’s adventures to the Alaska wilderness have evolved into an annual pilgrimage to experience Alaska on it’s terms, travel with a close friend, and to satisfy a thirst for adventure that only Alaska can quench.

The Twin Lakes Paddle is one of our signature trips, and one that we feel represents the epitome of wilderness travel in Alaska. The supreme wilderness of Twin Lakes, located in the heart of Lake Clark National Park, is a wonderland of crystalline waters set beneath a rugged rim of mountains and vast tundra expanses. It’s home to countless species of wildlife, and the legacy of Dick Proenneke – the conservationist featured in the popular PBS documentary, Alone in the Wilderness.

If industrial pollution degrades the Lake Clark area’s vast watershed, Oberlatz believes a domino effect could claim animals, plants, fish—and the businesses and people that depend on each. “There aren’t any examples around the world where a large open-pit mine and a vibrant tourism industry coexist,” he says. “It’s never been done.”
