Alaska Multisport Tours
Hiking-focused Alaska adventure tours and private wilderness trips – since 1998.
Alaska Alpine Adventures is, first and foremost, a hiking company. Our Alaska adventure tours – the trips listed on this page – are guided wilderness expeditions with hiking as the through-line, complemented by paddle days on glacial lakes and inflatable-canoe segments down Arctic rivers when those are the right way to reach the next stretch of country worth walking. The boats are not the focus. The hiking is the focus, and the boats are how we string the camps together when the country will not connect on foot.
And – uniquely on this page – every itinerary we offer can be made private. From a multi-generational family vacation to a small composers’ retreat to a corporate leadership trip, we build private group adventure tours around the people in the group. That flexibility is rare in Alaska guided travel and it is the part of this page worth paying the most attention to.
Group sizes are capped at 8 guests on scheduled departures, with a 4:1 guest-to-guide ratio. Lead guides are Wilderness First Responder certified. Floatplane access is included on every trip.
Both scheduled and private Alaska adventure tour departures fill quickly – scheduled trips often sell out months ahead, and private group windows for peak summer dates need to be locked in early. If you have a target year, reserve now.
Why Choose Our Alaska Adventure Tours
Hiking Is the Through-Line
Every itinerary on this page is built around hiking as the primary daily activity. A typical day puts you on foot through open tundra, along river bars, or up alpine ridges; the paddle days exist to reach camps and country that you cannot walk to.
Private and Custom Group Expertise
This is our most distinctive offering. Any of our regularly scheduled trips can be made private – reserved exclusively for your family, friends, or organization. We also build fully custom itineraries from scratch for groups with a specific window, set of activities, or destination in mind. Past private trips have ranged from composers writing in the wilderness to multi-generational family expeditions. Learn more at /private-adventures/.
28 Years Curating Alaska Wilderness Tours
Alaska Alpine Adventures has been pioneering guided wilderness tours in Alaska’s national parks since 1998. Our founder is an Explorers Club member and credited with pioneering routes that did not exist before. When you book an adventure tour with us, you are booking the institutional knowledge that comes with nearly three decades of route-finding across Denali, Wrangell-St. Elias, Lake Clark, the Brooks Range, and the Alaska Peninsula.
Small Groups. Real Attention
Scheduled departures cap at 8 guests with a 4:1 guest-to-guide ratio. Private and custom departures are sized to your group. Lead guides hold Wilderness First Responder certification at minimum, with Swiftwater Rescue certification for any river-component trips. See the team at /guides/.
All-Inclusive. Floatplane Access. Real Camp Cooking
Floatplane transport, all activity gear (kayaks, paddles, inflatable canoes, group camping equipment), all trip food, and pre-trip lodging coordination are included in every itinerary. Trip meals are hearty, hot, and prepared in camp on backcountry stoves – adapted to whether the day’s travel is hiking, paddling, or transit.
Comfort and Challenge – On Your Terms
Itineraries can lean comfortable (basecamp days, lodge stays, family pacing) or lean rugged (long off-trail hiking, big paddle days, multi-day river segments). On private trips, we set the balance with you in pre-trip planning. See the full intensity scale at /intensity-levels/.
What to Expect on an Alaska Adventure Tour
An Alaska adventure tour with us is structured around hiking but uses other modes of travel where the country requires it. A typical week might start with a floatplane drop into a remote lake, two days of kayak-supported hiking with alpine tundra day-hikes from each camp, a transit hike between drainages, and finish with a multi-day inflatable-canoe segment on an Arctic river – interspersed with extended hiking layovers.
Wildlife on a wilderness tour rotates with terrain: brown bears and Dall sheep in Lake Clark and Katmai, caribou and wolves in the Western Arctic, moose, and bird life nearly everywhere. Most days alternate active travel – most often hiking – with quiet camp time. Group meals tend to become the social anchor of the trip.
Trips run 6-12 days depending on itinerary. Most of our terrain stays below 6,000 feet – this is wilderness travel, not high-altitude trekking. Long Alaska summer daylight gives the schedule flexibility. See /alaska-weather/ for seasonal context, and /destinations/ for park-by-park background.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an Alaska adventure tour?
On our site, an Alaska adventure tour is a multi-day guided wilderness expedition built around hiking, with paddle days on glacial lakes and inflatable-canoe segments on Arctic rivers used as transport between hiking camps when the country requires it. Our adventure tours run in Alaska’s remote national parks, are reached by floatplane, cap at 8 guests on scheduled departures, and are fully outfitted.
Can our group book a private or exclusive trip?
Yes – and this is one of our defining offerings. Any of our regularly scheduled trips can be reserved privately for your group at no surcharge over the standard per-person rate, subject to date availability. Private trips work well for families (including multi-generational), close friend groups, corporate retreats, and special-interest groups. Call 907-351-4193 to discuss available dates.
Can you customize an itinerary for our group?
Yes. We design fully custom Alaska adventure tours from scratch for groups with a specific window, set of activities, fitness level, or park in mind. Past examples include a composers’ residency in the wilderness, a multi-generational family expedition spanning two parks, and a corporate leadership group focused on small-group decision-making in remote terrain.
Is the hiking the focus of these trips?
Hiking is the focus. Alaska Alpine Adventures is a hiking company, and even our multi-activity adventure tours are structured around hiking as the through-line – the paddling and inflatable-canoe segments exist to reach country no foot route can. If you are looking for a multi-discipline expedition where rafting and kayaking are equal partners with hiking, we are a different kind of outfit.
