Alaska Rafting Trips
Hiking-focused multi-day river expeditions in Gates of the Arctic and the Noatak – since 1998.
Alaska Alpine Adventures is, first and foremost, a hiking company. Our Brooks Range river expeditions are no exception: hiking is the through-line, and the SOAR inflatable canoes carry us between hiking camps along the Alatna and the Noatak – country you simply cannot reach on foot. River days connect hiking days.
These trips fill years in advance. That is the most useful piece of information a prospective guest can have. For more than 25 years, we have guided remote multi-day river-and-hiking trips through Alaska’s most spectacular Arctic country – Gates of the Arctic National Park and the Noatak National Preserve, deep in the Brooks Range. Demand for these expeditions consistently exceeds the small number of departures we can run each season.
Every guide leading our river trips is Swiftwater Rescue-certified in addition to holding Wilderness First Responder certification. We use SOAR inflatable canoes – a craft that gives you a closer connection to the water than a standard raft and a gentler learning curve than a hardshell. Groups are capped at 8 guests, with a 4:1 guest-to-guide ratio.
Both of our Brooks Range river-and-hiking trips routinely fill 12-24 months in advance. If you are aiming for a specific season, reserve now – not later.
Why Choose Our Guided Alaska Rafting Trips
Hiking Is the Through-Line
These are not whitewater-focused trips. They are hiking trips that use inflatable canoes to access country no road or trail will reach. River days are unhurried floats interspersed with extended layovers for hiking up tributary drainages, walking onto open Arctic ridges, and exploring side canyons.
These Trips Fill Years in Advance
Both of our flagship Brooks Range expeditions – the Noatak River & Great Kobuk Sand Dunes Combination, and the Arrigetch-Alatna Pack Raft – typically fill 12 to 24 months out. If you have a target year, the time to reserve is now, not later.
Swiftwater Rescue + WFR Certified Guides
Every guide leading an Alaska Alpine Adventures river trip carries both Wilderness First Responder and Swiftwater Rescue certifications. River travel demands river-specific expertise – water reading, line selection, swimmer recovery – and we do not cut corners on it.
SOAR Inflatable Canoes
We use SOAR inflatable canoes. Compared to a standard whitewater raft, the SOAR sits closer to the water and creates a more intimate connection with the river. Compared to a hardshell, it is far more forgiving for guests with limited paddling experience.
Brooks Range & Arctic – Truly Remote
These river expeditions operate in Gates of the Arctic National Park and the Noatak National Preserve – country accessible only by floatplane, with no permanent human presence for hundreds of miles. The wildlife is grizzly, caribou, Dall sheep, wolves, and golden eagle.
Small Groups. 25+ Years on These Rivers
Trips cap at 8 guests, 4:1 ratio. Our team has been guiding these specific drainages – the Noatak, the Alatna, and their tributaries – for more than 25 years. Browse the river guide team at /guides/.
What to Expect on a Guided Alaska River Trip
A day on a guided Alaska river-and-hiking expedition starts with a hot breakfast on the riverbank, breaks camp, and pushes off into current. The pace is unhurried – these are wilderness floats with hiking layovers, not whitewater sprints. A typical river day covers 8-18 miles depending on flow, with mid-day stops on gravel bars for lunch and afternoon side-hikes up tributary drainages or onto open Arctic ridges.
The country changes every few miles. The Noatak runs through the Brooks Range and out across the Western Arctic; the Alatna winds past the granite spires of the Arrigetch Peaks. Wildlife sightings are routine – grizzlies fishing, caribou crossing the river, wolves working the far bank.
Weather varies. Expect everything from warm sun to cold rain in a single afternoon. See /alaska-weather/ for seasonal context.
Frequently Asked Questions
Honestly, the latter. Alaska Alpine Adventures is a hiking company, and our Brooks Range river expeditions are built around the hiking. The SOAR inflatable canoes are how we access drainages and camps no road or trail can reach.
Our flagship trips operate in Gates of the Arctic National Park (the Alatna River, with hiking access to the Arrigetch Peaks) and the Noatak National Preserve (a wilderness float that pairs with the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes). Both rivers are deep in the Brooks Range, accessible only by floatplane from Fairbanks.
No prior rafting experience is required. The SOAR inflatable canoe is approachable for first-timers, and your Swiftwater Rescue-certified guides handle technical decisions on the river. Reasonable fitness and the ability to hike off-trail for several hours are the only real prerequisites.
Both of our Brooks Range river-and-hiking expeditions typically fill 12 to 24 months in advance. If you have a target year and group size, we recommend reserving as soon as the season opens – often more than a year ahead of departure.
