Denali National Park Adventure Tours

Fully guided backpacking and hiking adventures in America’s Crown Jewel.

Alaska Alpine Adventures has been guiding Denali National Park since 2010 under an NPS Commercial Use Authorization (CUA). Our trips access the park from the south side of the Alaska Range, via charter flight to Moraine Lake – well beyond the bus-tour corridor most Denali visitors see. We run three scheduled multi-day trips here each summer: a 4-day basecamp hiking trip and two backpacking expeditions of 7 and 10 days, each operating in roadless Denali terrain where bus tours don’t go.

About Denali National Park

Denali National Park and Preserve covers six million acres in interior Alaska, anchored on the highest peak in North America – Denali itself, 20,310 feet, an Athabascan word meaning “the high one.” The original park was established in 1917 as a wildlife refuge for Dall sheep; in 1980 the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) expanded it to its current six-million-acre footprint, encompassing the summit of Denali and the wilderness reaches south of the Alaska Range where our trips operate. Often called the Crown Jewel of the National Park System, Denali holds one of the most stable and most studied wildlife populations in Alaska. Wolves, caribou, grizzly and black bears, moose, and Dall sheep range across an intact subarctic ecosystem that has functioned with minimal human disturbance for thousands of years. The park serves as both a wilderness preserve and an active scientific laboratory for long-term ecological study. The Athabascan peoples of interior Alaska have lived in the Denali region for thousands of years – Koyukon and Tanana north of the Alaska Range, Dena’ina to the south where our trips travel. Denali itself – the name, the mountain, and the sacred geography surrounding it – remains central to Athabascan cultural identity. The 2015 restoration of the Athabascan name to official federal use returned a long-standing local usage to the national map.

Our Guided Denali Trips

We run three scheduled trips into Denali each summer, all operating in the south-side wilderness around Moraine Lake. All trips fly in from Anchorage by Rust’s Flying Service charter aircraft. Our Denali Unexplored is a 4-day Level 2 basecamp hiking trip – our shortest Denali itinerary and a strong choice for families, first-time Alaska visitors, or anyone who wants south-side wilderness without a multi-day backpacking commitment. The group operates from a single basecamp with day hikes through off-trail terrain – the south-side wilderness has no maintained trails. This trip does not include a pre-trip hotel night in Anchorage; charter flights depart from Anchorage on day 1. Our Backpacking Denali (7-day) is a 7-day Level 2 wilderness backpacking trip covering 35+ miles through the south-side backcountry. The route travels off-trail through tundra, river drainages, and the foothills below the Alaska Range, at an intensity that’s accessible to active hikers with prior multi-day experience. The trip begins in Anchorage with a night at our partner hotel (orientation dinner and breakfast) before the day-2 charter flight. Our Backpacking Denali (10-day) is a 10-day Level 3 expedition covering 50+ miles through more demanding south-side terrain. Off-trail navigation, river crossings, and higher mileage days make this the most demanding of our Denali itineraries. Like the 7-day trip, the 10-day begins with a night at our partner hotel in Anchorage.

How to Get to Denali & When to Visit

All three of our Denali trips depart from Anchorage by Rust’s Flying Service charter aircraft, flying to Moraine Lake on the south side of the Alaska Range. This is a roadless area of the park, well outside the Denali Park Road corridor that most park visitors experience. The two Backpacking Denali trips include a pre-trip night at our partner hotel in Anchorage (orientation dinner and breakfast); the 4-day Denali Unexplored trip does not. The Denali season runs from late June through mid-September. June and early July offer the longest daylight, the most consistent weather, and the best chance to see Denali itself when summit conditions allow. August brings cooler nights and the start of fall color. Early September is the peak fall-color window before the season closes. All three of our Denali trips travel off-trail – the south-side wilderness has no maintained trails. For most travelers the practical question is not when to visit but which intensity level fits. The 4-day Denali Unexplored basecamp trip suits travelers without a multi-day backpacking background; the 7-day trip suits active hikers with prior experience; the 10-day trip requires strong fitness and longer days of off-trail travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Denali National Park on an AAA trip?

All three of our Denali trips depart from Anchorage by Rust’s Flying Service charter aircraft to Moraine Lake on the south side of the Alaska Range. This is a roadless area of the park – we deliberately operate outside the Denali Park Road corridor that most Denali visitors see. The two Backpacking Denali trips include a pre-trip night at our partner hotel in Anchorage with orientation dinner and breakfast; the 4-day Denali Unexplored trip does not include a pre-trip hotel.

Is this a Denali bus tour or shuttle trip?

No. Our Denali trips are multi-day wilderness experiences that access the park by charter flight from Anchorage, not by the Denali Park Road bus system. We operate in roadless Denali backcountry on the south side of the Alaska Range – the area where the road-corridor bus tours don’t go.

Will I see Denali (the mountain) on these trips?

When weather allows, yes – our trips operate within direct view of the Alaska Range, and Denali itself dominates the skyline from the south side. Denali’s summit is in clouds on roughly two-thirds of summer days; on clear days the view is unobstructed and unforgettable. Sightings cannot be guaranteed, but south-side terrain offers strong odds.

How fit do I need to be?

All three of our Denali trips feature off-trail hiking – the south-side wilderness has no maintained trails. Our Denali Unexplored (4-day basecamp) is Intensity Level 2 and accessible to active travelers who enjoy day hiking. Our Backpacking Denali 7-day is Level 2 backpacking, accessible to active travelers with prior multi-day experience. Our Backpacking Denali 10-day is Level 3 – the most demanding of our Denali itineraries, with longer off-trail days, river crossings, and pack weights of 35-45 pounds.

What is included in the trip cost?

Our Denali trips are fully inclusive of round-trip Rust’s Flying Service charter flights from Anchorage to Moraine Lake, professional guiding, all camping and group gear (tents and trekking poles included – many competing outfitters do not provide these), and meals during the trip. The two Backpacking Denali trips (7-day and 10-day) also include a pre-trip night at our partner hotel in Anchorage with orientation dinner and breakfast; the 4-day Denali Unexplored does not include a pre-trip hotel. Pricing currently runs $3,195 for Our Denali Unexplored, $4,795 for Our Backpacking Denali 7-day, and $5,195 for Our Backpacking Denali 10-day.
